A FEW MORE DETAILS

DSME is internationally recognized as a fundamental step in the management of diabetes, preparatory for lifestyle and pharmacological therapy. Without an appropriate DSME, all other interventions to take care of people with diabetes will likely fail, especially in the long-term. Indeed, DSME is intended to facilitate the knowledge, decision-making and skills mastery necessary for optimal diabetes self-care and to incorporate the needs, goals and life experiences of the person with diabetes.

A successful management of diabetes depends on beneficial interactions between the patient and the care team. In this regard, the patient-healthcare professional communication is central to the DSME and it should be patient-centered using strength-based language and active listening. This patient-centered approach requires a close working relationship between the patient and clinicians involved in treatment planning. This interactive roundtable will be an opportunity to openly discuss the barriers to a person-centered diabetes management, their consequences and strategies to overcome obstacles, in order to establish a collaborative relationship with patients and to assess and address self-management difficulties.
This will be done also considering the impact of diabetes digitalization on the DSME, looking both at benefits and risks, which is a hot topic as the use of digital health technologies has rapidly grown and is likely to play a key role in diabetes management.
