The moderated discussion will gather the perspectives of two epidemiologists, with expertise in global sharps safety and infectious diseases respectively, as they debate the role of needlestick injuries (NSI) prevention within the healthcare environment, taking under consideration the different regional situation and related legislation, the importance of an holistic approach to the issue and the role and benefits of passive technology for medical safety devices.
The session will include a live Q&A led by the moderator.

Amber Hogan Mitchell
DrPH, MPH, CPH (US)
Dr. Mitchell’s career has been focused on public health and occupational safety and health related to preventing infectious disease.
She is the President and Executive Director of the International Safety Center – a women-run non-profit. She also runs a successful consulting business and functions as a science advisor and subject matter expert for NIH/NIEHS, OSHA and other Washington-based firms for infectious disease and the COVID-19 response.
She serves as a board member for several occupational health and infection prevention organizations.
Dr. Mitchell holds an adjunct faculty position at the University of Maryland School of Medicine Department of Environmental and Occupational Medicine. Dr. Mitchell began her career as the first OSHA National Bloodborne Pathogens Coordinator.
She holds a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree from the University of Texas School of Public Health and a Master in Public Health from The George Washington University.

Gabriella De Carli

Infectious diseases specialist and epidemiologist at the National Institute for Infectious Diseases “L. Spallanzani” in Rome, Italy. Worked for 30 years as HIV clinician and hospital consultant in case of occupational and nonoccupational exposures to HIV, hepatitis and sexually-transmitted infections, administering post- and pre-exposure antiretroviral prophylaxis. Working in Public Health since the beginning of the COVID pandemic.
Principal Investigator since the ‘90s and full coordinator since 2008 of the Italian Study on Occupational Risk of HIV (SIROH), a network of 150 Italian hospitals led by the Spallanzani Institute since 1986, whose main aim is to investigate the epidemiology of occupational exposure and infection with bloodborne and emerging pathogens in healthcare workers and implement and evaluate preventive measures at a national, European and international level.
Expert consultant during the Social Dialogue between the European social partners HOSPEEM and EPSU for the development of the 2009 Framework Agreement on prevention from sharp injuries in the hospital and healthcare sector, implemented in the Directive 2010/32/EU.
Conducted a 3-year Health Technology Assessment of needlestick-prevention devices to enhance safety of health care workers (2011-2014) for the Italian Ministry of Health and two projects in the period 2017-2023 with the National Institute for Occupational Accident Insurance (INAIL) on the prevention of biological risk in healthcare workers.

François Sarkozy has held an extensive career in Healthcare: He began as a House Physician Pediatrician in Paris Hospitals (APHP). He later transitioned to the pharma industry where he held different leadership positions in France and in the US (Hoechst Marion Roussel, Aventis), then as an entrepreneur launching and developing different Management Consulting Practices and Communication Agencies specialized in healthcare (Managing Partner at AEC Partners, President of AEC Partners Inc., Founder/ President of Publicis Healthcare consulting).
He has held different board positions e.g. as the Chairman of Tonic App (Porto Portugal) and member of the Supervisory Board of Vesalius Funds (Luxemburg).
Dr. Sarkozy has authored numerous publications related to Clinical Research, Market Access, Real World Evidence, Public Healthcare.
An avid art collector, he is, along with Joanna Chevalier and Hervé Mikaeloff, one of the founders of CMS Collection in 2018.
